History of Hartswater

Hartswater has been built in 1934 and became a municipality in 1960. Nearby towns include Jan Kempdorp, Ganspan, Taung, Bull Hill, Tadcaster, Magogong, and Warrenton. Hartswater is a small agricultural town blessed with fertile land. It also functions as the main water supplier of the "Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme".

The 38-kilometer “Poplar lane” along the N18 road to Hartswater was planted in 1937 and is often considered the longest lane of its kind in the world. Farmers in the area had a problem that the wind blew away the crops. One of the solutions was that trees had to be planted in lanes to divert the wind. The result was one of the longest “Popular lanes” in the world. Today there is still a lot of the lane left, but much was removed because it had negative effects also. Many other trees were also lost due to bush fires. When driving on the road between Jan Kempdorp and Hartswater, you will be able to catch a glimpse of a bigger part of the beautiful lane.
